SAIARD

Area of Activities

The South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) undertakes a broad spectrum of activities spanning diverse geographical landscapes, from the lofty heights of the Himalayas to the extensive coastlines, and from the dynamic river systems to the scattered world islands. SAIARD’s mission encapsulates a commitment to understanding, managing, and sustaining these varied ecosystems through interdisciplinary research, innovative solutions, and robust partnerships.

The Himalayan Region

The Himalayan region, often referred to as the “Third Pole,” is a vital ecological and cultural landscape, home to some of the world’s highest peaks, extensive glacial systems, and diverse flora and fauna. This region is crucial not only for its unique biodiversity but also for its significant influence on the climate and hydrology of South Asia. Recognizing the importance and fragility of this region, the South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) has identified the Himalayas as a primary area of activity, focusing on sustainable development, climate resilience, and disaster management.

The Land & Rivers

The South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) places a strong emphasis on the interconnected arenas of Rivers and Land, recognizing them as the cornerstones of sustainable development, environmental resilience, and regional planning. Through its Centre for River Affairs and the Land Management and Administration Division, SAIARD undertakes multi-disciplinary research, policy advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives focused on integrated river basin management, flood control, watershed development, erosion monitoring, land use planning, and land governance. The institute actively collaborates with government bodies, academic institutions, and international partners to promote nature-based solutions, equitable land policies, and holistic river rejuvenation strategies, aligning with national and global sustainability goals. This dual focus underscores SAIARD’s commitment to preserving ecological integrity while supporting inclusive socio-economic growth across South Asia.

World Islands & Coastal Region

Islands and coasts, with their unique ecosystems, cultures, and economies, are critical areas of focus for global sustainability and resilience. Despite their often small size, islands play significant roles in biodiversity, climate regulation, and cultural heritage. However, they are also highly vulnerable to climate change, natural disasters, and economic challenges. Recognizing the importance and fragility of these regions, the South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) has designated world islands as a core area of activity. SAIARD’s initiatives aim to enhance the resilience of island communities, promote sustainable development, and conserve island ecosystems.

Our Consortiums

SAIARD's consortiums on the Himalaya, river systems, and islands are vital platforms for addressing the specific challenges and harnessing the opportunities of these unique regions. By fostering interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and policy advocacy, these consortiums aim to create sustainable and resilient futures for the Himalayas, river systems, and islands, ensuring environmental preservation and socio-economic development for the communities that depend on them.
