CRA

Rivers are considered as the lifeline of any civilization. It’s not only denote a geomorphic entity but an important ecological system on which the sustainability of modern society is dependent. Not only that, it is an international figure which determines the framework of correlation of between the intentional countries as well as helps to maintain the socio-economic balance through its various outreach modes like, trade, tourism, agriculture etc. But in spite of its pivotal role, the understanding of large river systems and appreciation of their multidimensional nature is still fragmentary. As a result, most of the rivers of the world are now going through a crisis mode due to the impact of various anthropogenic activities. The Centre for River Affairs (CRA), the first River based Think Tank Centre of world, has been developed under SAIARD, with a vision to highlight these various issues related to the river in front of the world as well as to support govt. in case of policy framing and also to connect this subject in our regular education system.

Vision

Centre for River Affairs (CRA) will act as a Think Tank and will be a supporting hand of the Govt. of India in case of policy framing & its implementation, riverine geospatial database design through the application of modern technologies, spreading the initiatives of Govt. of India through its various outreach programs as well as national & international collaborations  and also to incorporate river and its various artifacts into the mainstream education system.

Relevance

A river has some multi-dimensional  characteristics. It is not just a channelized  flow of water, but an important source of human  civilization.  Though we have focused on these various river related issues separately  like its channel morphometry, water, soil, landscape, agriculture, hazards etc. but we didn’t connect them altogether, we didn’t consider this valuable natural resource in a holistic manner. That is why this major subject is still now remain as an untold story to us and we are only focused to extract resources from river rather than give it back. May be due to this reason, still there is no river related study center yet has been developed in any university. Therefore, to consider its various importance we believe that CRA has a wide prospect to dealt with these various dimensions of river as well in case of policy advocacy through various international collaborations.
